NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Niger's junta said Saturday the U.S. military presence in the country is no longer justified, making the announcement on state television after holding high-level talks with U.S. diplomatic and military officials this week. He said Niger was suspending military cooperation with Washington and added that U.S. flights over the country’s territory in recent weeks were illegal. The U.S. has also invested years and hundreds of millions of dollars in training Niger's military. WASHINGTON—Videogame enthusiasts are scouring popular social-media platforms in the hope of finding classified U.S. military documents, turning the recent national-security crisis over leaked secrets into a global scavenger hunt. The competition pits online users eager to see secrets against the U.S. government, which wants to keep those secrets off the internet.
WASHINGTON—Mahsa Zahrabi, an Afghan teenager who was evacuated to the U.S. on her own after being separated from her family at Kabul airport last year, was sleeping on the floor in her aunt’s unfinished basement in Virginia when a healthcare worker visited the home. The healthcare worker, who had been called to check on the girl after Mahsa went to a local hospital with a panic attack, was alarmed by her living conditions. The healthcare worker tapped into her network of churches and volunteers and found her a foster family instead.
WASHINGTON—The U.S. and its allies used Thursday’s United Nations Security Council meeting to call for an investigation into Russia’s alleged war crimes in Ukraine, but proposed few concrete measures for moving such a process forward. “We support a range of national and international efforts to collect and examine mounting evidence of war crimes in Ukraine,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the floor at the United Nations Security Council meeting. “We must hold these perpetrators to account.”
NEW YORK—Major U.S. companies will pledge to hire more than 20,000 refugees over the next three years, a number that refugee advocates say will help integrate the wave of Afghans and Ukrainians who arrived last year. The hiring commitments are expected to be announced later today at an event organized by the Tent Partnership for Refugees, which is pressing corporations to hire refugees. The group said that the pledges reflect a growing awareness by U.S. companies that hiring refugees benefits their business. It said research shows that consumers value ethical behavior and refugees make more loyal employees.
Mark Frerichs, 60 years old, is in Qatar and is being offered a range of services to help his recovery, a senior White House official said. Mark Frerichs , a civil engineer and U.S. Navy veteran who was kidnapped in Kabul more than two years ago, was freed Monday in a prisoner exchange between the U.S. government and the Taliban, according to the White House. In exchange for Mr. Frerichs, believed to be the last U.S. citizen still being detained by the Taliban when U.S. forces departed the country last year, Washington handed over Bashir Noorzai , a drug lord who was handed a life sentence in the U.S. in 2009 for trafficking $50 million of heroin.
Few African regions have the nerve to say no to China. Independence-minded Somaliland is one. “We’re not going to allow anyone to dictate who we can have a relationship with,” said its foreign minister.
